April 12, 1861 The Civil War Begins |
At 4:30 a.m. on this day in 1861, the first shots of the Civil War were fired. Confederate troops fired on Fort Sumter in South Carolina's Charleston Harbor for 34 straight hours. On April 13, Union forces surrendered the fort. The Civil War had begun and would last another four years.
