Interest in Travel Agent TrainingThe Travel Institute is reporting interest in its new agent training program has surpassed pre-pandemic levels with a 78% increase in attendance for its introductory webinars in 2022 year-to-date over 2019 for the same period. In addition, enrollment in the nonprofit education leader’s TRIPKIT introductory training course continue to climb across all markets including colleges, partner agencies, and individuals, further indicating continued broad interest in travel careers.

“Individuals at all stages and walks of life continue to recognize the opportunity to join the travel industry and to set themselves up for success with the right educational foundation when they do it,” shared Diane Petras, CTIE, president of The Travel Institute. To accommodate increased interest, The Travel Institute increased the number of live webinars available each month while also adding an on-demand option.

Petras also pointed to two recent, non-industry reports that further support the current career opportunity for aspiring new agents:

  • US Travel Association’s forecast1 estimating $1.05 trillion USD will be spent on travel in the United States in 2022, up from $886 billion USD in 2021.
  • The Bureau of Labor Statistics Job Outlook for travel agents2 estimating travel agent employment is likely to grow 20 percent between 2021 – 2031 as the industry replaces thousands of agents who left over the past several years.

“These non-industry reports demonstrate what our travel community has already been experiencing. Travelers are back and they want and need truly professional support. Travel agents able to provide that support are well-positioned for a rewarding and worthwhile career,” Petras asserted.

This fall, The Travel Institute is again dedicating resources and funding to help aspiring new agents who want unbiased, cost-effective guidance in getting their travel career started with TRIPKITSM, the industry’s long-standing, gold standard in new travel agent education, along with complimentary coaching webinars, advice on travel career options, and other resources.

The equivalent of one year of college packed into an online, interactive, 19-module course with progress checks, TRIPKIT is self-paced to accommodate varying schedules. The curriculum focuses on real-world agent experiences, industry terminology, and a comprehensive overview of booking air, ground, accommodations, cruises, tours, and packages and numerous booking nuances, as well as interpersonal communications skills, sales and marketing best practices, world geography, and advice for starting a successful independent contractor travel business. TRIPKIT can be purchased directly from The Travel Institute and is also available through colleges and various partner organizations.

“TRIPKIT complements our Flight Centre training materials and ensures new members are up and running quickly with the foundation they need on the schedule they want,” shared Traci Bax, director of membership education and agent growth, Independent by Flight Centre. In 2021, over 3.3 million people visited Yosemite National Park, yet just 1% of visitors got off the main (and often crowded) trails. With the addition of these new trips to its U.S. tour range, Intrepid hopes to change this trend. Backcountry trekking allows adventurers to see these iconic destinations away from the popular trails, often times with no vehicles or fixed facilities in sight, while relying on responsible camping and a “pack in, pack out” philosophy that makes for some of the most sustainable holidays on the planet.

Demand for this style of travel in the U.S. has increased dramatically since the onset of the pandemic, which saw people wanting to get away from city crowds and closer to nature. This small group backpacking trip offers a wonderful opportunity to escape the crowds and absorb some of the best views in Yosemite National Park.

Travelers will sleep under the stars in the heart of Zion National Park on a backcountry camping and hiking adventure in Utah’s most famous national park. Highlights include strolling down the paved River Trail, buttressed by tumbling water and a 3,000-foot cliff face, experiencing the iconic Virgin River Narrows hike walking through moving water on the way to Orderville Canyon, and exploring Snow Canyon, which is like a mini Zion and cuts impressive walls from the lava-covered country above the rim through the slickrock country below.

Travelers will discover the best of the Olympic Peninsula and Mount Rainier, from the high alpine ridges and glaciated volcanoes to dramatic waterfalls, wildlife, and lush rainforests. VIA Rail Canada (VIA Rail) is proud to remain the most trusted transportation company in Canada for the fourth consecutive year according to the 2022 Gustavson Brand Trust Index (GBTI), published by the University of Victoria’s Gustavson School of Business.

In addition to having obtained a better ranking than last year, VIA Rail performed as one of the best employers for employee recognition ranking sixth out of 402 brands in the study.

“As we approach the almost complete resumption of our services planned in June 2022, we are very proud to have been awarded this title for a fourth consecutive year despite the circumstances that have affected the transportation industry for over two years now,” said Martin R Landry, Chief Commercial Affairs Officer. “Determined to always go further together and driven by our mission to put our passengers first, the results of this ranking show that VIA Rail stands out as a transportation provider. Besides a brand’s functional performance (quality, reliability, value for money) and the experience it offers, this study reveals that consumers also have a keen interest in the social responsibility and values of a brand. VIA Rail has been working for several years to reimagine the travel experience of its passengers, for a more modern, accessible and sustainable passenger rail service. Whether through its modernization program or its recently unveiled accessibility and sustainability plans, it’s time for VIA Rail to embody a vehicle for change in Canada.

About the Gustavson Brand Trust Index

To establish the Gustavson Brand Trust Index, the University of Victoria’s Gustavson School of Business completed a survey of close to 9,200 Canadians to learn about their perception of various brands in terms of their performance and social responsibility, among other things.
