Southwest Airlines is reporting third-quarter profits of $277 million on record revenue of $6.22 billion. Revenue is up more than 32% over the same period last year. Like JetBlue’s recent earnings call, Southwest predicted continued strong travel demand into the 4th quarter. The company expects operating revenue to jump 13% to 17% in the 4th Quarter. Higher fuel costs and the impact of Hurricane Ian squeezed operating margins for all airlines. The airline indicated delays in Boeing 737 deliveries are hampering expansion.
In a recent earnings call statement, JetBlue Airlines CEO Robin Hayes announces the airline is adding more overseas itineraries to its routes. Hayes states that JetBlue plans to add six additional Airbuses for the new Transatlantic routes. JetBlue currently flies from New York’s JFK and Boston to London’s Gatwick and Heathrow airports.
JetBlue managed a $57 million dollar profit for the third quarter as the result of strong demand and higher fares. Revenue was up 30% compared to last year’s third quarter. Higher fuel and labor costs narrowed operating margins, however.

The Travel Institute is reporting interest in its new agent training program has surpassed pre-pandemic levels with a 78% increase in attendance for its introductory webinars in 2022 year-to-date over 2019 for the same period. In addition, enrollment in the nonprofit education leader’s TRIPKIT℠ introductory training course continue to climb across all markets including colleges, partner agencies, and individuals, further indicating continued broad interest in travel careers.
“Individuals at all stages and walks of life continue to recognize the opportunity to join the travel industry and to set themselves up for success with the right educational foundation when they do it,” shared Diane Petras, CTIE, president of The Travel Institute. To accommodate increased interest, The Travel Institute increased the number of live webinars available each month while also adding an on-demand option.
Petras also pointed to two recent, non-industry reports that further support the current career opportunity for aspiring new agents:
- US Travel Association’s forecast1 estimating $1.05 trillion USD will be spent on travel in the United States in 2022, up from $886 billion USD in 2021.
- The Bureau of Labor Statistics Job Outlook for travel agents2 estimating travel agent employment is likely to grow 20 percent between 2021 – 2031 as the industry replaces thousands of agents who left over the past several years.
“These non-industry reports demonstrate what our travel community has already been experiencing. Travelers are back and they want and need truly professional support. Travel agents able to provide that support are well-positioned for a rewarding and worthwhile career,” Petras asserted.
This fall, The Travel Institute is again dedicating resources and funding to help aspiring new agents who want unbiased, cost-effective guidance in getting their travel career started with TRIPKITSM, the industry’s long-standing, gold standard in new travel agent education, along with complimentary coaching webinars, advice on travel career options, and other resources.
The equivalent of one year of college packed into an online, interactive, 19-module course with progress checks, TRIPKIT is self-paced to accommodate varying schedules. The curriculum focuses on real-world agent experiences, industry terminology, and a comprehensive overview of booking air, ground, accommodations, cruises, tours, and packages and numerous booking nuances, as well as interpersonal communications skills, sales and marketing best practices, world geography, and advice for starting a successful independent contractor travel business. TRIPKIT can be purchased directly from The Travel Institute and is also available through colleges and various partner organizations.
“TRIPKIT complements our Flight Centre training materials and ensures new members are up and running quickly with the foundation they need on the schedule they want,” shared Traci Bax, director of membership education and agent growth, Independent by Flight Centre. Bax said The Travel Institute has been “a big help,” creating and maintaining a custom education package to support the host agency’s new-to-the-industry members.
After completing TRIPKIT, students take the Travel Agent Proficiency, or TAPSM, exam to confirm mastery of travel industry basics. Recent TAP graduates are featured at Hire Me, enabling agency owners and suppliers to easily connect with educated, new talent. According to recent TAP graduates:
- “The materials were current and, with the clout The Travel Institute has, I’m confident starting my new career.” –Matthew Hughes
- “I have been in the travel business off and on for 10 years and didn’t know half of what I learned… I wouldn’t change a thing!” –Robert Staples
- If you want to start a career in travel, this is the best program!” –Juan Herrera
- “I was unsure about not attending a course in-person but I quickly realized TRIPKIT is a robust learning experience with valuable, detailed, well-constructed content. TRIPKIT gave me a good foundation AND confidence to take the next steps.” –Catherine Marucci
- “TRIPKIT is great… well worth the money you invest in yourself.” –Patti Kollar, CTA
While the travel industry does not set standards for agent education, Guida Botelho, CTIE, director of education for The Travel Institute, emphasized the value well-educated agents offer both consumers and colleagues. “Frontline agents are the face of our industry. For the consumer, travel agents facilitate their dream experience OR they don’t. Our singular mission is to advance travel professionals for travelers, for individual agents, and for the industry at large. For industry newcomers, we ensure the broad-based, foundational industry education and confidence they need to be successful from the start,” Botelho explained.
Those exploring a career in travel or seeking a new agent training solution for their team or students can visit The Travel Institute to learn more and are also invited to join a complimentary New to the Industry webinar, which includes a look inside the course, an overview of new agent education, and a roadmap for industry success.

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has proposed new rules requiring airlines to disclose any fees in addition to fares for baggage, ticket changes or seating family members together anytime an airfare is displayed.
President Joe Biden, announcing the new rules at a meeting of the White House Competition Council, said, “You should know the full cost of your ticket right when you’re comparison shopping, to begin with where you’re – what airline you’re going to fly with so you can pick the ticket that actually is the best deal for you.”
Airlines for America, a trade group representing major US air carriers has stated its objections to the new rules, indicating the airline industry is one of the most highly competitive.

The Public Health Agency of Canada has announced that travelers will no longer have to test, or show proof of vaccination, for COVID-19.

Christened in Natchez, Mississippi, on August 30th, 2022, the brand new riverboat is currently sailing the company’s longest river cruise itinerary, a 22-Day Complete Mississippi River Cruise from New Orleans, Louisiana, to St. Paul, Minnesota. American Symphony is scheduled to arrive in: Hannibal, MO, 9/24; Fort Madison, IA, 9/25; Davenport, IA, 9/26; Dubuque, IA, 9/27; Winona, MN, 9/28 and Red Wing/St. Paul, MN, 9/30.
American Cruise Lines has been cruising the Mississippi River for over a decade and has specialized in all-domestic cruising for over 30 years. The company has grown to become the country’s largest U.S. cruise line and will have 17 small ships and riverboats exploring 34 states in 2023. American Symphony is the 5th new modern riverboat American Cruise Lines has launched on the Mighty Mississippi in just the past 4 years, indicating the company’s strong leadership and ongoing commitment to the growth and development of ports and communities along the length of the River from St. Paul to New Orleans.
American Cruise Lines regularly offers over 10 different Mississippi itineraries, which include cruises along the Ohio and Cumberland Rivers, plus holiday and theme cruises. The company’s river cruises regularly visit Upper Mississippi ports and towns an average of 28 times each per season. Visits in the region continue to increase as American’s fleet consistently expands every year, adding capacity and itineraries along the Upper River. American’s U.S. fleet has more than doubled in the past 5 years alone.
“American Cruise Lines led the last decade of Mississippi River cruising, and with new riverboats like American Symphony, we look forward to leading the next one. We remain committed to introducing new small riverboats each year which enables us to deliver personalized all-American river cruises along the country’s most iconic river,” said Charles B. Robertson, President & CEO of American Cruise Lines.
In just the past few years, the company has transformed the U.S. river cruise market to compete on a global scale by launching new state-of-the-art riverboats every year since 2018. All ships offer 100% outward-facing staterooms, and the Line’s acclaimed Modern Series riverboats offer 100% private balcony accommodations. American offers 100% domestic itineraries across the country and has aggressively grown its U.S. fleet, but has continued to keep each ship very small—all are under 190 passengers, which is especially important to the experience they deliver on the Mississippi River.
“We have many new luxurious riverboats and a record number of guests who are excited to explore the Mississippi River with us. The demand we are seeing is due in large part to the beautiful new riverboats but also to the long-established relationships American Cruise Lines has with the ports and towns along the entire river. These relationships help us to consistently deliver authentic American experiences, which are curated and led by local experts, guides, and community members whom we have worked with for many years,” said Frank Klipsch, American Cruise Lines Director of City Partnerships & Special Projects.
American Symphony follows the acclaimed 2021 debut of sister ship American Melody, and it will be followed in early 2023 by a 6th Modern Series riverboat, sister ship American Serenade. American Symphony is the 9th riverboat in American Cruise Lines’ fleet for 2022, which includes 4 classic paddlewheelers and 5 modern riverboats, plus 5 small cruise ships.
Accommodating 175 guests, American Symphony features 5 decks and offers 100% private balcony staterooms, including gracious suites and single staterooms. The new riverboat has an elegant design which employs a stunning use of glass, allowing for unparalleled views throughout the ship. American Symphony also showcases American’s Modern Series hallmark—patented opening bow and retractable gangway, as well as the gorgeous 5th deck skywalk with an ellipse skylight, which cantilevers dramatically over the 4th deck café below. American Symphony also offers spacious lounges inside and out, a grand dining room, fitness center, and a wellness-yoga studio.
American Symphony‘s sold-out inaugural cruise followed an 8-Day Lower Mississippi River itinerary which departed from New Orleans and concluded in Memphis, Tennessee on September 3rd. The new riverboat will continue to explore throughout 2022, cruising the Upper Mississippi River through October and returning to the Lower River for seasonal Holiday cruises through December. American Symphony will sail a full Mississippi season again throughout 2023, with an extensive Upper Mississippi season operating from June through October 2023.
