Adventures at the End of the World

As the closest departure point to Antarctica, and the world’s southernmost city, this destination is known as The End of the World. Ushuaia sits at the edge of Argentina, its backdrop part of the monolithic Andes mountain range. A lesser known destination in Argentina, Ushuaia is removed from the life most people know – but keeps nature at its doorstep for the traveler to witness.

Ushuaia, meaning ‘deep bay’ in the indigenous Yaghan language, lies between the Beagle Bay and the Martial mountain range. It looks out from the tip of Tierra del Fuego Island, or Land of Fire, named so by the arriving Spanish settlers when they saw the fires of the indigenous people along the coasts.

Often the starting point of trips to Antarctica, expedition and adventures cruises head out frequently. This makes it a perfect stop for those headed out for arctic adventures. But there are many other reasons to visit Ushuaia. For instance, the Tierra del Fuego National Park. Here, the traveler will find waterfalls, forest, mountains, and glaciers. There are also 20 species of mammals and 90 species of birds. All this, while only being 6.8 mi from Ushuaia – a close jaunt to see nature at its best.

The area is also a top fly-fishing location with more than 10 rivers and 4 lakes, and the sport fisherman is almost guaranteed to pull more than their fair share of trout with a pink or red color. The Museo Mundo Yámana contains representations of the traditional Yaghan life, including the pre-and-post history of their contact with Europeans. Then there is the Martial Glacier, where the traveler can take a hike to the top for a panoramic view of Ushuaia and the channel, a truly eye-opening experience.

Though Argentina is still closed off to international travelers, due to COVID-19, it’s only a matter of time until it opens again for travelers. Once it does, the opportunity to see the end of the world should not be missed. And Aerolineas Argentinas will be ready to fly the traveler there for an experience at the edge of civilization.
