Just Do It!

You might recognize these three words as the popular motto of a very successful sports company. Nike is the name of the company, and I must admit that the slogan took off quickly and is easy to internalize.

You might have guessed by now, however, that I am about to take exception to this motivating mantra. As a brand-new year stares us in the face, I am asking you to step back for a moment to think about the challenges, opportunities, and success stories that lie ahead.

Cubes with letters forming the message "Do it!"

FACT: Any future success is not about to come via hope, a wish, and a prayer. The truth is that the positive gains you’re about to experience in the coming months will come as a direct result of focus, hard, work, tenacity, persistence, and a great deal of energized skill. (And a modicum of luck.)

Motion for the sake of motion is just that: Movement. I am guessing that results are what you have in mind as you enter the New Year. Simply spinning your wheels while appearing busy and frantically engrossed in “putting the current fire out” doesn’t pay the rent. The six-letter word that comes to mind as we kick things off in 2024 is the word commit.

Just Commit to It

I believe that 93.75% of New Year Resolutions fail for the same reason. The person involved conjures up a handful of attractive ideas and quickly goes public with their good intentions. “Stop this… start that… cut back here, and add a bit there.” On January New Year’s Day, these all sound like good, plausible, and doable ideas. But there is one important missing link. Did you sit yourself down and decide that you were willing to pay the price to make these changes? Yes, I said PRICE. All change comes with a price.

In other words, are you going to COMMIT to seeing your resolutions through to completion?

When you become frustrated and your discipline is tested to the max, it will be your commitment to your goal that will see you through. I realize this is easier said than done. But here is my advice to you: If you question your true commitment to the task, don’t allow yourself to become a hypocrite by writing it down in the first place. If you write it… commit to it. Then, and only then, do it.

So as not to belabor my initial message for 2024, I want you to edit Nike’s slogan and adopt one of your own. Just Do It now becomes …. Just Commit To It. *****The “IT” in question needs to be your definition.
