On October 5, 1947, President Harry Truman made the first presidential address broadcast by television. In 1947, however, only a few thousand Americans had televisions. Most Americans, therefore, did not watch the event, but listened to it on radio. Truman's broadcast asked the American people to reduce the consumption of grain products so that more could be exported to Europe where years of war had devestated agricultural production.
