The Soviet nuclear submarine K-19 was perhaps the unluckiest piece of military equipment ever assembled. From the beginning of its construction to its decommissioning, the submarine would suffer fires, radiation leaks, and a series of fatal accidents. On the 15th of November 1969, K-19 managed to collide with the USS Gato attack submarine in the Barents Sea. Both submarines were operating at a depth of 200 ft. K-19 surfaced using an emergency ballast tank blow. The impact severely damaged the navigational and weapons system of the submarine. K-19 was repaired and returned to the fleet. Three years later, a fire onboard took the lives of 28 sailors. K-19 was decommissioned in 1990, having earned the nickname "Hiroshima". |
