The Holland Tunnel

New York City's Holland Tunnel opened on this day in 1927. The tunnel is a marvel of early 20th century engineering, running under the Hudson River, and connecting the Manhattan with Jersey City, New Jersey. The tunnel is named for its designer, Clifford Holland. Situated in bedrock under the river, construction began in 1920 and took seven years to complete.
