Congress adopts the Stars and Stripes

On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress adopted a new resolution on the design of their newly forming nation's flag. The resolution stated that the flag would have 13 stripes alternating white and red, representing the original 13 colonies, and 13 stars in a blue field forming a new constellation. This flag, known as the "Stars and Stripes", was based on banner carried by the Union soldiers led by General George Washington. With each entrance of a new state, new stars were added to the flag, but the stripes remain the same.
