The Opening of Gatwick Airport

On June 9, 1958, Queen Elizabeth II officiated at the opening of Gatwick Airport. The name “Gatwick” derives from the name of the land and former manor on which the airport is located and means “Goat Farm” dating back to 1241. Today, the airport is the second busiest in the UK, behind Heathrow and in the 22nd busiest in the world. Most do not realize that the airport has only a single runway.
