The Opening of the Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge opened on this date in 1937. The bridge is the link between San Francisco and points north, joining U.S. Route 101 and State Route 1. On an average day more than 120,000 vehicles cross the span. Six lanes of vehicle traffic and walkways on both sides of the bridge carry commuters and travelers back and forth. The Golden Gate is painted an orange vermilion color to blend with the natural surroundings yet to enhance its visibility in the foggy Bay Area weather. The Golden Gate is widely thought to be one of the most aesthetically pleasing examples of bridge engineering in the world.
