The Constitutional Convention Convenes

On May 25th, 1787 the Philadelphia Convention convened with delegates from each of the states. The problems arising under the Articles of Confederation were pressing the new nation. Many of the delegates, notably James Madison, intended that the Articles of Confederation be scrapped in favor of a new system of government. With George Washington presiding over the convention, the final result of the first Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia was the United States Constitution.
