March 29, 1803

Surveying Begins on Cumberland Road

On March 29, 1803 Congress authorized the construction of Cumberland Road (known today as National Road) from what is present-day Wheeling, West Virginia to Cumberland, Maryland.

Cumberland Road became one of the catalysts for westward expansion, the route making it possible for pioneers to move from the Eastern Seabord to the Western lands of Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. In 1811, thousands began using the road to find their new lives in the West.
