The Birth of Dr. Seuss

On this day in 1904, Theodor Geisel was born in Springfield, Massachusetts. By the time of his death 87 years later in 1997, he had written 40 books selling more than 200 million copies. His pen name "Dr. Seuss" was derived from his mother's maiden name. His first best seller The Cat in the Hat, was published in 1957 as an exercise in teaching children 250 new vocabulary words. It is said that the rhythm that infused his poetry was inspired by the engines of a passenger ship on which he traveled on a voyage to Europe. His flair for rhyme and rhythm found expression in classics like Green Eggs and Ham and Horton Hears a Who! The man whose books have been read and loved by millions of children never had any children of his own.
