North Korea captures the USS Pueblo


On this day in 1968, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea captured the USS Pueblo, a US Navy research vessel with 83 crew members, off the coast of North Korea. The United States insists the Pueblo was in international waters at the time. One crew member was killed during the capture. Tense negotiations for the return of the crew ensued. On December 23, 1968, after 11 months as prisoners, the crew was released. The USS Pueblo remains in the possession of North Korea to this day.

The Assassination of the 1st Earl of Moray

The assassination of regent James Stewart, 1st Earl of Moray threw Scotland into civil war. Moray was assassinated by Hamilton of Bothwellhaugh, a supporter of Stewart's half-sister Queen Mary. In July 1567, Mary was forced to abdicate and Stewart was appointed regent of Scotland earning him the disdain of the supporters of Scottish independence and his subsequent assassination.
