December 17, 1903 |
Orville and Wilbur Wright had suffered through weeks of mishaps and delays at their camp in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. Undeterred, the two brothers continued to experiment with different designs and fuel mixtures for their attempt at flight. On December 17, 1903, Orville, having won a coin toss, flew their airplane 120 feet in 12 seconds at a speed of 7 miles per hour at an altitude of approximately 10 feet. The flight was witnessed by five members of the public, and the age of air travel was born.
